What’s In A Name?
An inherent part of Ghanaian culture is a deference to the ‘Soul Day’, the day of the week on which a person is born. Ghanaian names are given to the son or daughter born on each day of the week, typically as a middle name if a Western name is adopted.
These “Soul Names” have further meanings concerning the character and personality of a person. Most Ghanaians will conduct meaningful ceremonies on their Soul Days since that is the day they are most connected to. Soul names are so enmeshed in the culture that natives can readily identify an individual’s Soul Day based on their temperament.
